The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme, launched on October 3, 2024, marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to empower its youth through practical, industry-based learning. At a time when the nation is rapidly transitioning toward a knowledge-driven and technology-oriented economy, the demand for real-world experience has become more vital than ever. Acknowledging this need, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of skill development and employment as essential pillars of national growth. The scheme reflects this vision by offering young individuals an opportunity to gain hands-on exposure across diverse sectors, enabling them to build confidence, enhance their employability, and prepare for a competitive job market.
A Transformative Initiative for India’s Youth
Announced in the Union Budget 2024–25, the PM Internship Scheme aims to provide one crore internship opportunities over the next five years. The program began with a pilot project for the financial year 2024–25, targeting 1.25 lakh internships. These opportunities span across twenty-four major sectors, including energy, automotive, travel and hospitality, banking and financial services, information technology, and several other industries that play a crucial role in India’s economic landscape. To maintain quality and credibility, companies participating in the pilot phase were shortlisted based on their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) expenditure over the past three years. This ensures that interns are placed in organizations that follow responsible corporate practices and demonstrate a strong commitment to social development.
One of the most notable features of the scheme is that it functions independently of all other existing skill development and apprenticeship programs run by Central or State governments. By focusing solely on internship-based learning, the PM Internship Scheme creates a distinct platform that connects youth with industry-specific work environments. This independence allows the scheme to remain streamlined, targeted, and outcome-oriented, ensuring that interns receive a meaningful experience tailored to their career aspirations.

Eligibility Framework Designed for Inclusivity
The eligibility structure of the scheme has been carefully designed to include a wide section of Indian youth while ensuring that the benefits are directed towards those who genuinely need experiential learning. It is open to young individuals aged 21 to 24 years, who are Indian nationals and are not engaged in full-time employment or full-time education. Students pursuing distance or online education are eligible, ensuring that flexible learners are not excluded from gaining practical exposure. The scheme welcomes candidates who have completed high school, higher secondary, ITI certifications, polytechnic diplomas, or undergraduate degrees such as BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BBA, BCA, B.Pharma and similar qualifications. By accepting a broad range of educational backgrounds, the scheme promotes inclusivity and widens the talent pool across different sectors.
At the same time, certain exclusions are necessary to maintain fairness and ensure that opportunities reach those with relatively fewer professional advantages. Graduates from premier institutions such as IITs, IIMs, National Law Universities, IISERs, IIITs, NIDs, and similar high-ranking institutes are not eligible. Individuals holding specialized or professional degrees such as CA, CMA, CS, MBBS, BDS, MBA, or any higher postgraduate qualification are also excluded. Additionally, those currently engaged in government-funded training programs or who have already completed apprenticeships under NATS or NAPS cannot apply. There is also a family income cap of ₹8 lakh per annum, and children of permanent government employees are not eligible. These criteria ensure that the scheme benefits candidates who truly require support, exposure, and pathways into the workforce.
Partner Companies and Collaborative Participation
The strength of the PM Internship Scheme lies in its robust network of partner companies. The Ministry has identified the top five hundred companies based on their CSR spending, ensuring that participating organizations are financially stable, socially responsible, and capable of providing meaningful internship experiences. These companies represent a wide range of industries, enhancing the overall diversity of internship opportunities. Companies that are not part of the top five hundred may also participate, provided they seek approval from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, particularly if they belong to underrepresented sectors. This approach ensures that no area of industry is left behind, and students from different academic backgrounds get exposure to their preferred fields.
Furthermore, the scheme offers flexibility for companies that may not be able to host interns directly. Such organizations are allowed to collaborate with forward or backward supply chain partners—such as vendors, suppliers, and customers—or with other companies within their business group. This collaborative model expands the scope of opportunities and ensures smooth implementation of the scheme across diverse sectors and regions.
Financial Assistance and Support Mechanisms
Financial support forms an essential aspect of the PM Internship Scheme, ensuring that economic limitations do not deter deserving candidates from participating. Interns receive a monthly stipend of ₹5,000, which includes ₹500 contributed by the partner company based on attendance and performance, while the remaining ₹4,500 is transferred directly by the government through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). In addition to this monthly support, interns receive a one-time joining allowance of ₹6,000, also credited via DBT. This financial assistance provides a safety net for youth, especially those from economically weaker sections, enabling them to participate without worrying about basic expenses during the internship.
Another strong pillar of the scheme is the comprehensive insurance coverage provided to every intern. All participants are enrolled under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), with premiums fully paid by the government. This ensures financial protection against unforeseen circumstances. Many partner companies may also provide additional accidental insurance, further strengthening the safety net for participants entering real-world workplaces.
A User-Friendly Online Portal for Seamless Access
The PM Internship Scheme is entirely managed through a dedicated online portal that simplifies the application and selection process for both candidates and companies. For applicants, the portal provides a personalized dashboard, auto-generates a professional resume based on the information entered, and allows them to search and apply for opportunities based on their preferences such as sector, location, functional area, and qualification. Each candidate can apply for up to five internship opportunities at a time, making the selection process manageable and focused.
The portal is equally efficient for companies, allowing them to post internship openings with complete details including educational requirements, job nature, location, facilities, and any additional expectations. Once applications are submitted, the portal shortlists candidates by matching individual preferences with company requirements, while ensuring inclusivity through priority for candidates from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and Persons with Disabilities. For each opening, around two to three times the number of required candidates are forwarded to companies for final assessment, ensuring that businesses have enough choice to select the best fit.
Conclusion
The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme represents a bold and forward-looking step toward enhancing India’s human resource potential. By merging financial support, digital transparency, and industry collaboration, the scheme creates a powerful platform for young people to gain real-world experience and bridge their transition from education to employment. It encourages active participation from leading companies while providing a structured and inclusive pathway for youth to build the skills, confidence, and exposure needed in today’s competitive economy. With its nationwide reach and long-term vision, the PM Internship Scheme stands as a transformative opportunity that will shape the careers of millions and contribute significantly to India’s economic and social development.
